The history of the Transport Industries Skills Centre comes from Transport
Training ACT which was officially formed in 1991 to offer training to individuals
and companies in our region. Its purpose was to provide a dedicated and structured link
to training for the transport industry.
From as early as 1989 when preliminary meetings were held at Gas Industry
House, Canberra, representatives of local industry have played a vital role
in what is today a modern and capable training organisation.
Our Executive Officer Bob Waldron was appointed in 1991 and from a temporary
office and with vehicles and equipment borrowed from industry, established
Transport Training ACT.
After much lobbying Transport Training ACT was granted the lease on Sutton
Road Driver Training Centre in July-August 1991.
Vehicles and equipment were purchased (again with assistance from industry)
and in 1993 a large shed was built to house cars, trucks, equipment and to
allow for under cover training for forklift and various other activities.
In 1996 with much assistance from industry once again a large area at the
rear of the shed was filled and leveled giving an enormous flat training area.
By this time Transport Training ACT had also formed the Transport Industries
Skills Centre (TISC)
In an ongoing program of additions and improvements and the continual
upgrading of training vehicles, equipment and facilities has placed TISC as
a leader and highly regarded training provider for the industry.
